The ‘RRR‘ awards craze seems to have only increased its pace. The latest appreciation towards the team is coming from all over for the impressive four nominations it received at one of Hollywood’s major critics’ awards- the Hollywood Critics Association Awards.
What’s even more impressive is that the nominations gained are all in major categories. Take a look at all the categories in which the Telugu-language S.S. Rajamaouli magnum opus secured nominations:
Best Feature Film
Best Director
Best International Feature Film
Best Action Film
In the Best Feature Film category, ‘RRR’ will be up against critics’ favourites like ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, ‘TÁR’, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘The Woman King’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Women Talking’.
For a movie which was put aside in its own country as the official entry to the Oscars, this nomination is a statement more than anything. It is assumed that the reason ‘RRR’ was snubbed was because of the fear that the film was too Indian- a celebration of all that Indian movies are generally known for and hence doesn’t come into the bracket of the kind of films we usually associate with having a chance for a win at the Oscars. While the film had found an ever-increasing audience in the west, it was thought that all this love would have no sway over the critics.
With all the recent developments up to the latest nominations, it seems it would be better if we put our best forward instead of sending something that we think may be appealing to the award voters.
‘RRR’ in the Best Action Film category will be competing against ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘The Batman’, ‘The Woman King’, and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.
A proud moment for India, in the Best Director category, Rajamouli will be competing against names like Baz Luhrmann(Elvis), Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert(EEAO), James Cameron(Avatar: The Way Of Water), Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) and Todd Field(Tar) amongst others.
