‘Thalaivii’ dropped in theatres last month (in September) and the film managed to earn back a third of its production cost before it went to OTTs for streaming. While the theatres didn’t pull in many filmgoers, the dual release of ‘Thalaivii‘ in both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video certainly did so (virtually). And it worked so well because of the separate language releases on both platforms – the film was released in Hindi on Netflix while it was released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam on Amazon Prime Video. The film has gone on to the top of their most viewed films carts for the week, for both streaming platforms – and it has become the first Indian film to be successful in two languages (Hindi and Tamil) on two major OTT platforms. However, it looks like ‘RRR’ will likely break that record with its OTT release.
The producers of ‘RRR‘ have already sold the streaming rights of said film to two big OTT platforms – ZEE5 and Netflix. The acquisition price of the aforementioned streaming rights was hefty and the film is expected to release in ten languages in total (both in theatres and on OTT). The Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions will premiere on ZEE5, while Netflix will stream the movie in Hindi, English, Portuguese, Korean, Turkish, and Spanish. We expect ‘RRR’ to gather the attention of many more subscribers (from ZEE5 and Netflix) than ‘Thalaivii’ managed to receive and we expect more of a turnout in different languages versions of the Telugu film than the Tamil one.
One of the reasons for this is because of the lead actors, Ram Charan and NTR Rama Rao Jr. They have huge pan Indian appeal and they will bring in a huge crowd by themselves. But the additions of Ajay Devgn, Ali Bhatt and Ray Stevenson to this blockbuster of a film will not only bring in more Indian subscribers but also some international ones as well. Another reason would be the Rs. 400 crore plus budget. Big budget Indian films such as the ‘Baahubali’ films and ‘2.0’ have all been cinematic spectacles so no matter how the film will turn out, we expect this upcoming feature film to be a cinematographic masterpiece.
With the movie expected to release around the globe in theatres on 7th January 2022, the OTT release is expected to happen by Feb, so we do not have much time left.
