The highly anticipated Star Wars movie from Shawn Levy finally has a name—and a leading man. Titled Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming film will star Ryan Gosling in the lead. Holy sh*t!
The news was announced during a well-attended Star Wars Celebration panel in Tokyo, part of the biannual event dedicated to the franchise’s Jedi, Sith, and everything in between. It’s still unclear whether the newly announced title has any connection to the 2001 video game of the same name.
The announcement of Star Wars: Starfighter (set to release on May 28, 2027) officially makes May 2027 the month of Disney. The Ryan Gosling starrer is scheduled to hit theatres just three weeks after the global release of Avengers: Secret Wars, which drops on May 7, 2027.
Levy has been developing this Star Wars project since 2022, with a screenplay written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously teamed up with Levy on This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.
Several other Star Wars films are also in development under Disney’s Lucasfilm, with directors like James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Simon Kinberg involved. Obaid-Chinoy’s film will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey from the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter will be a stand-alone entry, completely separate from the Skywalker Saga, which follows iconic characters like Luke and Anakin Skywalker. The events of Starfighter are set around five years after those in the 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Stay tuned for more updates!
