After a glorious run on Netflix, ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ finally has been dethroned from the top spot among TV shows. While in India, it was ‘Jamtara Season 2’ that had done the job way back, in other regions, the new thriller series ‘The Watcher’ is what has accomplished the deed of being the #1 TV show on Netflix. What’s common among both hits? Both are true-crime limited series by creator Ryan Murphy.
‘The Watcher’ is based on the internet urban legend of “The Watcher,” which began to get traction online in 2018 due to an article published on ‘The Cut’. The series follows the true story of a married couple who, after moving into their dream home in New Jersey, US are harassed through letters signed by a stalker named ‘The Watcher‘.
The series has an ensemble cast that includes Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Margo Martindale, and Jennifer Coolidge among others. While the series got mixed reviews from the critics, it is making the required noise amongst the audience and doing what a series like that is supposed to do- make one feel uncomfortable.
While fans are in a very uncomfortable place after watching the thriller series, one person who is the most comfortable will be creator Ryan Murphy. His and Netflix’s collaboration has been very successful as of late for both parties. Besides ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ and ‘The Watcher’, Murphy also has the horror film ‘Mr. Harrigan’s Phone’ on Netflix’s trending charts. The film is the story of a teenager called Craig who befriended the older Mr. Harrigan for whom he used to do odd jobs. Craig had put his smartphone in Mr.Harrigan’s pocket before burial. The story follows what happens when Craig sends his dead friend a message and gets a return text.
While they are not perfect, the two series and film do have a good number of watchers and in all probability, Netflix will be very keen on continuing the collaborations with Murphy, a big name in the thriller content genre. If the man has given them hits one after the other, why wouldn’t the streamer?
