S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ Wins Big at Saturn Awards 2022

Ever since the grand theatrical release of S.S. Rajamouli’s period action extravaganza ‘RRR’ and its subsequent release on the Netflix OTT platform including the US, the film has consistently garnered international attention in a big way. The film’s cult following globally has even made it a formidable contender in the Oscar 2023 race.

And earlier today, ‘RRR’ has achieved yet another distinction on an international platform. It has just been announced that the blockbuster movie has bagged the ‘Best International Film’ award at the 2022 edition of the ongoing Saturn Awards (genre-entertainment awards). And in doing that, ‘RRR’ has outdone international films like ‘Downtown Abbey: A New Era’ (UK), French rom-com ‘Eiffel’, Danish action-comedy ‘Riders of Justice’, German sci-fi romance film ‘I’m Your Man’, and the Keira Knightley starrer ‘Silent Night’.

Other major wins at the Saturn Awards include ‘The Black Phone’ (Best horror film), ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ (Best fantasy film), ‘The Boys’ (Best action/adventure series), ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’ (Best streaming limited series), ‘Stranger Things’ (Best horror/thriller series), ‘Loki’ (Best fantasy streaming series), ‘Marcel The Shell With the Shoes On’ (Best animated film), ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ (Best animated series), ‘Nightmare Alley’ (Best thriller film), ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ (Best sci-fi streaming series), Oscar Isaac (Best actor for Moon Knight), Tom Cruise (Best actor for Top Gun: Maverick), Matt Reeves (Best film direction for The Batman), ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (Best superhero film), and ‘Nope’ (Best sci-fi film).

Coming back to ‘RRR’, some time back, the film had achieved the rare feat of acquiring the ‘Certified Fresh’ status on the reviews’ aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes. Later, ‘RRR’ was designated as ‘Must-See’ on Metacritic – yet another rare achievement, especially for an Indian film. And the film’s incessant appreciation from the foreign film fraternity, particularly from US-based audiences, continues till date in a never-seen-before way.

Helmed by S.S Rajamouli, the period action movie ‘RRR’ features Ram Charan and Jr.NTR in the lead roles and Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt in pivotal roles. The film is a fictional tale set in the 1920s that revolves around two legendary Indian revolutionaries namely Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (played by Jr. NTR).
