Samrat Prithviraj starring Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar hit the movies on 3rd June, 2022. This Yash Raj Films production was directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi based on ‘Prithviraj Raso’ by Chand Bardai. The film is continuing to have a dismal run at the box-office besides its mixed critical reception. Although the film is under-performing all around India, there is one state that totally rejected the film without a sound of thought.
Samrat Prithviraj opened to around 10.5 crores and collections dropped to merely 5 crores on Monday. The film also had dubbed releases in Telugu and Tamil besides its original Hindi language release. Not only is the film performing badly in all the South Indian States, but Kerala has totally rejected the film. Samrat Prithviraj clashed at the South Indian box office with Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil and Suriya starrer ‘Vikram’ and burnt it’s hands brutally. Several trackers have reported on the film not collecting anything at the movies in Kerala and screens being shifted to Vikram and Major respectively.
Total Rejection at KBO. Washout!!!

Now, it’s one thing for a hindi film underperforming in a south Indian state because of its clash with a South Indian mammoth release, and another for a big scale period spectacle from Yash Raj Films not even having a bare minimum audience in this part of the country where Dangal grossed around 10 Crores in 2016. PK, Dhoom 3, War, Sanju, Padmaavat, Sultan etc grossed enough despite not being dubbed in Malayalam. If Samrat Prithviraj is a badly made film, or people have changed theatre going sensibilities post Covid-19 or people were simply disinterested in the film.. We don’t know. Bollywood films can gain back their glory, may be by signing credible South Indian actors in their biggies and also by tightening their writing departments from now on, looking at how good ‘Vikram‘ is doing in Kerala.
