Celebrated Indian filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is fresh off the heels after the widespread acclaim of his latest directorial ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, is also gearing up for another ambitious project ‘Baiju Bawra’. The movie was expected to begin filming this year itself. However, as per the latest buzz, ‘Baiju Bawra’ has now been delayed and is slated to begin filming sometime in 2023.
You might already be aware that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is not the first filmmaker to attempt a film on the subject. Back in the year 1952, Vijay Bhatt had directed the super hit film ‘Baiju Bawra’ in which Bharat Bhushan had essayed the role of Baiju while Meena Kumari was seen as his love interest Gauri.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s version of Baiju Bawra will reportedly feature the talented duo of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. It is also being speculated that Ajay Devgn will also reunite with SLB for the film. He will ostensibly be playing the role of the famous singer Tansen. However, the same has not been confirmed by the makers yet.
Interestingly, around 12 years back, there was an attempt to remake the cult 1952 film ‘Baiju Bawra’. The project was supposed to be helmed by Shalimar’s director Krishna Shah, who is credited for successfully creating the Bollywood-Hollywood crossover. Aamir Khan’s name had also cropped up during those discussions to star in the film. Then, in 2019, it was announced that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was interested in remaking ‘Baiju Bawra’.
The parent film ‘Baiju Bawra’ was a musical romantic drama that followed the story of Baiju, a musician’s son. After learning that one of the Navratnas in Akbar’s court Tansen is responsible for his father’s death, he decides to exact revenge by throwing a musical dual challenge at the greatest classical vocalist Tansen.
Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh will next be seen together in Karan Johar’s upcoming directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’. Ranveer Singh’s next is the eagerly anticipated social comedy film ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’. While Alia Bhatt’s forthcoming acting projects include ‘Brahmastra’, ‘Darlings’, and ‘Heart of Stone’.
