Audiences will finally be able to know the rousing story of the “Shaheed-e-Azam” Sardar Udham Singh, through Shoojit Sircar’s passion project, ‘Sardar Udham‘. For the unversed, the term means “martyr extraordinaire”. Sardar Udham premieres on Amazon Prime Video on 16th October. Amazon Prime Video has just dropped the trailer of the film, and it is everything viewers have looked forward to for a long time now.
The trailer shows moving glimpses of Vicky Kaushal as Sardar Udham Singh. The actor brings forth an uncanny resemblance to the freedom fighter and martyr, both as a rustic Indian revolutionary, and as a polished engineer while living in London and working for the freedom of the country from abroad. Added to it are poignant glimpses of the Jallianwala Baugh Massacre, the event that triggered an unrelenting hunger for revenge in a then young Udham Singh, revenge that he achieved twenty years later by killing Michael O’Dwyer in London in 1940. Dwyer was the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab at the time of the massacre, and supported the firing on innocent Indians wholeheartedly.
History lesson aside, the trailer gives ample hint that Sardar Udham will be a film worth watching. That it is releasing on OTT on Amazon Prime Video and not in theatres is a disappointment for viewers. Still, it is a happy event that we’ll finally get to watch the film. Sardar Udham Singh’s story, his single-minded devotion to the country’s freedom cause, and how he went about it needs to be told to a wider audience. A 1999 film starring Raj Babbar as Shaheed Udham Singh attempt it before, but failed to make an impact then. Let’s hope that is rectified by Shoojit Sircar’s upcoming film.
