Previously, we had made our readers aware of the purported development of the tenth installment of the Saw film franchise. The word on the street about yet another Saw movie has turned out to be true as the makers have officially announced that the tenth Saw movie is set to release on 27th October 2023. The upcoming spin-off/sequel will be helmed by Kevin Greutert, who had directed ‘Saw IV’ and ‘Saw 3D’, which came out in the years 2009 and 2010, respectively.
Honestly, we don’t think it’s an exciting idea to move forward with another ‘Saw’ spin-off/sequel as the franchise may have already reached its saturation point, at least from a creative point of view. However, from a commercial perspective, the makers are not wrong to keep alive their in-house cash-cow undertaking, which has evidently stood the test of time with the nine ‘Saw’ films having grossed over a whopping $1 billion at the box office.
Interestingly, the last ‘Saw’ film titled ‘Spiral’ is, so far, the least grossing movie of the long-standing franchise. Although the pandemic too might have had a role to play in the film’s underwhelming box-office response. This makes us wonder whether carrying forward the ‘Saw’ franchise is a wise idea or not.
Moreover, bringing back Kevin Greutert to direct the tenth ‘Saw’ might not prove to be a good decision. Because the two ‘Saw’ films he had directed, namely ‘Saw VI’ and ‘Saw 3D’, are among the least rated titles from the franchise, particularly the latter. While ‘Saw VI’ holds an abysmal Metacritic score of 30%, ‘Saw 3D’ is the worst rated Saw movie with merely 24% Metacritic score.
Most of you might agree that the first ‘Saw’ film which came out in 2004 is the best so far with respect to audience and critical appreciation. It was helmed by ‘Aquaman’ director James Wan, who also acted as the film’s executive producer in the successive Saw films. The only way to revive the ‘Saw’ franchise or to respectfully end it with a worthy conclusion was to make James Wan direct ‘Saw 10’. But sadly, it’s not happening as per the latest update.
James Wan’s first ‘Saw’ film follows an oncologist and a photographer waking up in a bathroom with a corpse lying between them. They have been chained with a pipe, so escape seems impossible. The trapped men must undergo the unthinkable if they want to survive in a sadistic game masterminded by a notorious serial killer. The movie has gained a cult following over the years and hasn’t yet been surpassed by its successors. Can ‘Saw 10’ do that? We would like that, but it seems unlikely.
