The makers of the long-standing horror franchise ‘Saw’ are replete with ingenious ideas to keep alive their in-house cash-cow undertaking, that has evidently stood the test of time. Because after the nine ‘Saw’ films grossing over a billion dollars in sales, the tenth installment ‘Saw X’ is now set for its theatrical release on 27th October 2023.
As per the latest update, ‘Saw X’ has just wrapped its filming. The film’s director Kevin Greutert himself announced the filming wrap with the hope that the film retains the tentative title ‘Saw X’.
But the question is: Was ‘Saw X’ really needed? Are the diehard fans of the first ‘Saw’ movie helmed by James Wan really interested in seeing another ‘Saw’ film? We don’t think so, to be honest.
Take the example of the previous ‘Saw’ movie ‘Spiral’ starring Chris Rock in the lead role. Several critics gave their thumbs-down to the ninth film of the horror franchise. It received a mere 37% critics score on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes.
In fact, even the first ‘Saw’ film had got a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of just 50%. But despite that, the parent film has still got a cult following from a huge segment of audiences. Most of you might agree with that.
But, sadly, that’s not the case with the remaining eight ‘Saw’ sequels / spin-offs which followed. The next eight ‘Saw’ films (Saw 2 to Saw 9), after the first film, currently hold below average Rotten Tomatoes critics scores of 37%, 30%, 18%, 13%, 39%, 9%, 32%, and 37%, respectively.
Can ‘Saw X’ turn it around? We think it’s highly unlikely. As mentioned above, ‘Saw X’ has been directed by Kevin Greutert, who had also helmed the seventh ‘Saw’ film ‘Saw 3D’, which is the lowest rated Saw movie ever. So, bringing back Kevin Greutert to direct the tenth ‘Saw’ might not prove to be a good decision.
Furthermore, the most recent ‘Saw’ movie ‘Spiral’ turned out to be the least grossing instalment of the horror film series. So, from a commercial and box-office perspective also, releasing another ‘Saw’ film didn’t make sense.
And for these reasons, we don’t think it’s an exciting idea to release ‘Saw X’ and to carry forward the ‘Saw’ franchise after ‘Saw X’ because the franchise is already past its saturation point. Unless James Wan himself decides to direct the eleventh Saw film.
