Supreme Court has today issued notice to centre, social media platforms and OTTs and sought their response on a plea seeking directives to take necessary steps to prohibit sexually explicit content on the latter two.
The PIL filed by five petitioners is being heard by the bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih who have mentioned how the petition raises an important issue which is very much within the domain of the executive or legislature and that they must do something about it.
To this Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, responded that while some regulations are in place, work upon the rest is underway.
The top court also noted that it is the “social responsibility” of the OTT and social media platforms to address any concerns regarding obscene and objectionable material on their platforms.
Moreover, the petition also sought guidelines for constituting a National Content Control Authority to look after the issue and prohibit any obscene or sexually explicit content on OTT and other social media platforms.
