Scorsese’s life is no less than a film itself, and in the recent set of events, it is clear that the movie goes on and takes an unexpected turn. Charges were brought against him, alleging that Martin Scorsese took money from an aspiring UK screenwriter but later didn’t follow up on his promises.
Let’s dive a bit deeper, shall we?
The charges are indeed serious, as the claim suggests that Scorsese charged $500,000 to develop a WWII movie but later showed no progress in the future.
Simon Afram penned the screenplay “Operation: Fortitude,” detailing Allied deception strategies before the Normandy invasion.
In January 2022, Scorsese joined as an executive producer, enhancing the project’s appeal to top industry talent. Producers Afram and Edward Kahl aimed to film in Europe that year under the production banner Op-Fortitude.
“Although more than 15 months have passed since the contract was signed, Scorsese has done nothing to further the production of the motion picture and has been non-responsive to Op-Fortitude, leaving Op-Fortitude with no option but to pursue its breach of contract, rescission, and conversion claims in court. Op-Fortitude is seeking the return of the $500,000 initial payment as well as punitive damages.”
On the other hand, Scorsese’s cross-complaint revealed his outreach to directors for “Operation: Fortitude” gained no interest. He argued that the plaintiffs lacked industry understanding, citing “The Irishman” as an example of lengthy development.
Scorsese’s legal team emphasized the misconception of instant success in filmmaking for newcomers, urging realistic expectations. But as of now, the case has been settled, with undisclosed details. Hopefully, the drama is over, and we can see Scorsese returning soon with his next project.
