The latest episode from Marvel’s Secret Invasion, titled “Betrayed”, hints at a major Skrull replacement. Over a million Skrulls are currently residing on Earth, and God knows how many of them are working for Gravik. Some of the rebel Skrulls who blindly follow him have infiltrated prominent governmental organizations or gained access to significant amounts of political power. Now, it seems like a prominent Avenger has been replaced by one of the rebel Skrulls. Yes, we are talking about Colonel James Rhodes, aka War Machine.
The final moments of Episode 3 show Priscilla (Fury’s wife) going to a safety deposit box containing a gun. She also appears to be working with Gravik. She receives a phone call but hears a voice different from Gravik’s. If you listen closely, that voice sounds like Rhodey’s. Though, the episode’s dialogues or closed captions did not reveal his identity. But a true Marvel fan will recognize his voice in a heartbeat.
Fury does not trust anyone other than Talos and a few of his allies. And Rhodes is not his ally. In Episode 2, Rhodey calls Fury by his first name. According to Fury, no one calls him by his first name. This scenario must have altered his faith in Rhodes.
Since bringing back everyone who “blipped” due to Thanos’ snap, the Avengers have disappeared. Iron Man and Black Widow are no longer with us. Captain America disappeared after the events of Endgame. No one knows The Hulk’s whereabouts. Hawkeye must have retired. And Thor must be adventuring with Gorr’s daughter. Scott Lang is no longer in public eye as well, thanks to Kang’s actions in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This leaves Rhodey representing the Avengers and occupying a position of power in the US government.
Skrulls must have chosen Rhodes because of his political power and his reputation as a superhero. Both could be very beneficial to Gravik’s mission. So, the question we must ask ourselves is “Where is Rhodey?”.
Fans should expect Rhodey to get rescued in one of the upcoming episodes of Secret Invasion, as he is set to appear in Armor Wars. However, his Skrull replacement may make things harder than they already are for Fury. On the other hand, we may see the real Colonel James Rhodes cleaning up the mess left by his Skrull replacement in Armor Wars.
