Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar‘s Dharma Productions had announced last year that they had bought the Hindi remake rights for Prithviraj Sukumaran’s 2019 Malayalam hit, ‘Driving Licence’. Well, now we have further news on the title of the film, its cast, crew, and other details. Akshay Kumar’s Hindi remake of Driving Licence is titled ‘Selfiee’, and it will have the Bollywood superstar team up with Emraan Hashmi in the black comedy and drama film.
Raj Mehta, director of Akshay Kumar’s previous superhit ‘Good Newwz’, will helm Selfiee. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Akshay Kumar’s Cape Of Good Films, and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Prithviraj Productions are jointly producing the film. The story features two parallel leads – the first is that of a film star who seeks a driving licence, and the other is a Motor Vehicle Inspector who is a big fan of the star. Akshay Kumar plays the superstar, while Emraan Hashmi plays the character of the motor vehicle inspector in Selfiee.
Driving Licence was a hit when it released in 2019. It was directed by Jean Paul Lal, and written by late screenwriter Sachy. Prithviraj Sukumaran played a superstar actor who needs a new driving licence to get permission to shoot at a sensitive navy-controlled place. Suraj Venjaramoodu plays the Motor Vehicle inspector in charge, who is a huge fan of the star and invites him to visit the office so that he can get to meet him.
Circumstances take a turn for the worse when misunderstandings ensue between the two at the transport office, leading to a clash of egos. The movie takes a long hard look at the perils of fanboyism and the false charms of larger-than-life celebrities. Driving Licence is an engaging watch throughout.
It remains to be seen if Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee will be able to match up to the Malayalam original. Interestingly, Selfiee seems to have been made for an outright OTT release rather than a theatrical release. Disney Plus Hotstar is the streaming partner for Selfiee.
The makers of the film launched an official announcement video for Selfiee this afternoon. The stars of the film, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi can be seen dancing together and acting goofy on screen, before ending the minute-long video and teaser with a – what else – Selfiee!
