Marvel Studios has dropped the new Big Game trailer for Thunderbolts*, and it finally gives us a brief look at the movie’s main villain. If you guys have been following the development of this Jake Schreier project closely, then you must know that the ultimate endgame for the antihero faction will be none other than Sentry, or should we say The Void.
The trailer opens with a mysterious and powerful figure wreaking havoc on the streets of New York, dropping massive debris from buildings and making people disappear out of nowhere, possibly killing them. We also see Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) addressing a press conference and telling people that The Avengers are not really coming to save them, as we have not seen them together, and they have probably disbanded after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
So, who do the people get for help? Well, it’s the damn Thunderbolts, as Red Guardian (David Harbour) likes to call the group. Although, for some reason, Bucky, aka Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) seems to hate the name.
Anyway, we see all the members – including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky, Red Guardian, John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) – putting their egos and differences aside and uniting to stop the one and only, Sentry.
Well, the Big Game trailer doesn’t show Sentry in his classic yellow comic-accurate suit. Instead, we get a dark-robed Sentry, or The Void, at 1 minute 50 seconds into the trailer.
The first trailer revealed Lewis Pullman as Bob, whose full name is Robert Reynolds. In the comics, he was a struggling addict who accidentally discovered the formula for the “Golden Sentry Serum,” a super-soldier experiment far stronger than Captain America’s. Upon consuming it, he gained godlike powers but also created The Void, an evil entity that emerges whenever Sentry loses control.
Given his internal struggles and immense powers, we could see Sentry in a much bigger role in the MCU beyond Thunderbolts*. It will be interesting to see how the character has been portrayed in the upcoming MCU project – the main villain? Or a tragic anti-hero?
Based on what we see in the latest clip, it is safe to assume that the guy causing so much trouble on the streets of NYC is The Void, Sentry’s dark alter ego.
Written by Eric Pearson, Joanna Calo, and Lee Sung Jin, and helmed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on May 2. Stay tuned for more updates. Check out the movie’s new Big Game trailer below!
