Malayalam language superhero movie ‘Minnal Murali’ was certainly one of the most eagerly anticipated OTT releases this year. The movie commenced streaming on the Netflix OTT platform this Christmas weekend with a rousing response by cinephiles. The film has not just struck the right chords with the audiences but also garnered critical acclaim while living up to its massive hype. ‘Minnal Murali’ can rightly be regarded to have revived in India the underutilized superhero genre, which was previously considered to be a forte of Western filmmakers only.
Following the immense appreciation and the film’s climax, naturally, the grapevine was abuzz with speculations for a much-desired sequel and a potential full-fledged franchise to be built around the ‘Minnal Murali’ universe. And now, the prayers of all movie buffs seem to have been answered by the film’s producer Sophia Paul in her recent interview with journalist Rajaneesh.
The eminent film producer has revealed that the ‘Minnal Murali’ sequel will be mounted on a bigger scale and will possibly be executed in 3D format, although nothing concrete can be remarked about the same. An announcement for the confirmation of ‘Minnal Murali’ sequel can be expected in the near future, probably next month. The original film’s director Basil Joseph, besides of course the lead actor Tovino Thomas, will most likely resume his directorial duty for the sequel.
The parent film ‘Minnal Murali’ is an effective on-screen narration of the perpetual notion of good vs evil and is set during the 1990s period. It follows the superhero origin story of an ordinary but good-hearted man named Jaison (played by Tovino Thomas), a small-town tailor from the state of Kerala. One day, Jaison is struck by a bolt of lightning (in a rare astronomical event) which bestows him special powers like super speed, extraordinary strength, and extreme agility. How Jaison embraces his powers to become a local superhero and assumes the mantle of Minnal Murali to fight his evil counterpart, forms the rest of the film’s plot.
