The 13th edition of the International Film Festival of South Asia (IFFSA) Toronto 2024, which takes place from October 10–20, will celebrate the five decades of acting career of veteran actor Shabana Azmi.
A seminar, a musical celebration called Shab-e-Sur, and a showing of Shyam Benegal’s Mandi are all part of the festival’s homage program. One of the most well-known actors in India, Azmi is renowned for her representations of unique, frequently nonconformist female characters in a variety of genres. She has received numerous international honors, six Filmfare Awards, and a record-breaking five National Film Awards for Best Actress.
She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and the Padma Shri by the Indian government in 1998. Her work has been in over 160 Hindi films, primarily in the independent and neorealist parallel genres, however, she has also worked on several overseas projects and mainstream releases.
After starring in Ankur in 1974, Azmi went on to become a prominent figure in parallel cinema, a new-wave movement of art films renowned for its realistic and serious themes that occasionally drew support from the government. A number of her films have been praised for their accurate depictions of Indian society, customs, and traditions, and for being examples of progressivism and social reformism.
Her illustrious career will be celebrated throughout the IFFSA Festival. Masterclasses and workshops will also be available during IFFSA Toronto 2024, with festival ambassador Anup Singh leading an acting session. Launched during the festival, the IFFSA Talent Fund 2024/25 will support up-and-coming filmmakers.
