In a comedy of errors, or should we say, luck by chance, we now know the OTT release date for one of this year’s biggest Bollywood film, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer, ‘Pathaan’, much before its theatrical release. The streaming release date for Pathaan was inadvertently revealed by the counsel for Yash Raj Films in court. As per information revealed in court, ‘Pathaan’ will release on OTT on Prime Video India, around 25th April 2023.
Yash Raj Films, the makers of Pathaan, were asked to reply to a petition demanding that Pathaan be released with subtitles, close captioning and audio description in Hindi, for the benefit of visually and hearing impaired people to watch the film without comprehension constraints. In response to this, the counsel for Yash Raj Films argued that ‘Pathaan’ is almost on the verge of release in theatres, and the changes requested will be difficult to fulfil.
The honorable court then directed Yash Raj Films to make the subtitles, close captioning and audio description in Hindi available in the OTT version of the film, when Pathaan will release on OTT. It was in response to this that Yash Raj Films revealed that Pathaan will release on OTT on 25th April, 2023, three months after its theatrical release.
The court has asked Yash Raj Films to incorporate the changes in Pathaan’s OTT version, and submit the movie for recertification to the Central Board Of Film Certification by 20th February. The CBFC will review the changes and pass its judgement by March 10.
Going by Prime Video India’s recent pattern of releasing in-demand films on streaming on its platform, we reckon that Pathaan will first release on pay-per-view on Prime Video Rental Store by March 25, two months after Pathaan’s release in theatres, and then on SVOD and free-for-subscribers by April 25th.
