When the MCU superhero movie ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ arrived in theatres in 2021, it broke several box office records besides garnering critical acclaim. So, naturally, fans have been curiously waiting for an update on the Shang-Chi sequel. Just a few months after the first film’s release, the sequel was confirmed with Simu Liu returning as the titular role superhero and Destin Daniel Cretton as the sequel’s writer-director. But since December 2021, there hasn’t been any major update on ‘Shang-Chi 2’, that is, until today.
In a recent update by Simu Liu himself on Instagram’s new platform Threads, the Canadian actor has revealed that the Shang-Chi sequel was slated to release after the new Avengers movie but that keeps pushing back. Now, as we all know, there are two Avengers films namely ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which are expected to be released in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
It’s not clear which Avengers movie Simu Liu was referring to, but in any case, going by his statement, the Shang-Chi sequel will only kick-off production at least after work on the very next Avengers movie ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ is done, which should be sometime in 2025. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ is slated to be released in May 2026 and is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton himself.
However, it is quite possible that even before the release of the Shang-Chi sequel, Simu Liu can potentially make an appearance in either or both of the above-mentioned Avengers movies. As far as the basic plot of ‘Shang-Chi 2’ is concerned, it is likely to delve into the life of the titular superhero after he gets the power of the ten rings and what he does with it.
‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ follows the adventures of the highly trained martial artist Shang-Chi (played by Simi Liu), who is trying to live a normal life. But now the superhero must deal with his past after his estranged father and the misguided leader of the Ten Rings organization directs him on a dangerous path to find a hidden village. The film is streaming in India on the Disney+ Hotstar OTT platform.
