Fans are closely watching the ongoing developmental stages of the DC Universe, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The Guardians of the Galaxy helmer has already unveiled the first slate of films and tv shows under the newly established DCU. But before those projects, Warner Bros need to release the leftovers of the old DC Extended Universe, including Zachary Levi’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It is not clear whether the upcoming sequel will affect or alter the future of DCU. The film’s helmer, David F. Sandberg, addressed this matter via Twitter.
Replying to a fan on Twitter, Sandberg promised that Shazam! 2 would not contradict the future of DC Universe. Check out his full reply below:
He definitely won’t if people don’t go see the movie. What I’ve been told is that there’s nothing in the Shazam films that contradict the future plans for DC. So the possibility for more Shazam is there and if that’s what you want your best bet is to go see the film. https://t.co/MdjZuGK4co

Fans are curious to know if Shazam will be a part of future DCU projects or not. However, the leading man, Zachary Levi, seems optimistic about his character’s return in Gunn and Safran’s DCU. But it all comes down to the sequel’s success in theatres. This is what Levi said to Den of Geek in his recent interview:
“The success of the second movie will determine a lot. I think we get to be a really special part of the DC Universe moving forward.”
Considering the current climate of superhero films, no one can say for sure if Shazam! 2 will emerge as a box-office sensation. Fans nowadays want a perfect balance between quality and entertainment in superhero projects. Plus, the global prominence of a superhero character plays a crucial role in this scenario. And the harsh truth is that Shazam is not a very well-known character worldwide. The first entry (2019) received critical praise. But its theatrical performance was average, earning nearly $366 million globally. Additionally, the sequel will face stiff competition from Michael B. Jordan’s Creed III, Jenna Ortega’s Scream VI, Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 4, and Chris Pine’s Dungeons & Dragons film in March this year. It will hardly get time to breathe properly at the global box office. It will be a big win for Sandberg and Levi if their forthcoming project soars in terms of collections.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will release in theatres worldwide on March 17. It stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and many more acting talents. Stay tuned for more updates.
