‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the DC superhero movie ‘Shazam!’, was previously scheduled for a theatrical release on 16th December 2022. However, the makers have decided to postpone the film by five days. So, the movie will now release on 21st December 2022.
The release delay for ‘Shazam 2’ is certainly a sensible decision considering the fact that the makers of ‘Avatar 2’ had announced their plans during the CinemaCon 2022 event last night to retain the film’s theatrical date on 16th December 2022. And it was an unnecessary clash in the first place.
The first glimpse of the ‘Avatar’ sequel titled ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, was showcased amidst immense hype at the CinemaCon event. The first ‘Avatar’ film (2009) was a blockbuster visual spectacle that boasted groundbreaking special effects. The Academy Award-winning film was helmed by James Cameron and became the highest-grossing film of all time (>$2.8 billion), closely followed by Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (>$2.7 billion).
So, naturally, directly clashing with the sequel to the biggest blockbuster of all time wouldn’t do any good to any film, however big the film may be.
Coming back to ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, the makers had showcased some sequences from the movie at CinemaCon. The sequel would continue the story arc of Zachary Levi’s character, who is portrayed as the champion of the titular wizard Shazam. Like the first film, the Shazam sequel is also being helmed by David F. Sandberg.
Now that ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ has been postponed by five days, it will avoid a direct clash with James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 2’. But the question remains: Is the 5-day gap between ‘Shazam 2’ and ‘Avatar 2’ still enough?
If ‘Avatar 2’ sticks to its release date of 16th December, then, even now, it can severely affect the revenue prospects of ‘Shazam 2’. But since there are more than seven months remaining, there is a possibility that ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ might be delayed further to counter the effect of Avatar’s expected box office domination. It would be interesting to see what happens next.
