Since the movie theatres have been shut, many people have lost their jobs who used to work in this business, the filmmakers also decided to release their movies on OTT platforms which made several of distributors angry. During these times Netflix, Prime, Disney+Hotstar and other apps tasted blockbuster success in the market. Earlier when these platforms came into the Indian market they were expensive for the Indian audience. Hence they came up with cheap costs like 129/- per month for Amazon prime video and 199/- by Netflix which gained them a huge subscriber base. But now India’s 41 year old rental video company Shemaroo has gone one up on these platforms by doing something similar with what YouTube has been doing since past years.
ShemarooMe Box Office has launched an app where audience can view the newly released film directly from the comfort of their homes in their mobile or TV. YouTube had this feature but only for old and already released films. But with ShemarooMe Box Office one can watch the newly released film directly in their home by paying a minimal fees.
According to the officials of ShemarooMe, people can buy the tickets for these new releases on a mere amount of ₹100 on Bookmyshow. Yes you heard that right, you can buy the tickets and watch them on the ShemarooMe app.
The reason behind this is that the official at ShemarooMe are thinking from the perspective of the producers who will now have the luxury of a new platform which is on a transactional basis. Earlier the film’s fate was decided based on the star power, if the movie had an A list actor, the distributors would give them majority of the screens and the niche films, even though running successfully used to be taken out of the screens. This was the case why films which are being acclaimed nowadays didn’t do well at the box office. Now these filmmakers will be able to see how many people paid to watch their films on the app if their movie didn’t got enough screens. But still they would be earning decent amount of money through this.
While this has been the major problem one other problem arises in the form of safety. Yes the pandemic is still going on and people will look to be more secured while going out hence they would like to avoid large crowds and queues for tickets, large gatherings like movie theatres. Even though the government has ordered the movie theatres to run at 50% occupancy but still people would like to take their precautions and ShemarooMe has come up with a great idea for providing the same content in the safety of their homes with half the price.
So even though the theatres will continue, people who don’t feel like going to a theatre can watch the film through their home and in low cost.
