We all know that Shamshera has bombed miserably at the box office. Despite stellar work from Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt, the film flopped due to its poor direction, weak editing, bloated runtime, and outdated script. Many believed that the latest YRF project might serve as a fitting reply to the current prospering period of the South Indian film industry and commence Bollywood’s renaissance era. Well, that is not going to happen now!
Ranbir’s last project was Raju Hirani’s Sanju which came out nearly four years ago. And a lot has happened during this big gap. Atul Mohan pointed out this scenario in one of his recent statements, “If you don’t deliver for such a long time, then your positioning does get affected. His counterpart, Kartik Aaryan, meanwhile got business worth Rs. 180 crores with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.”
Out of his last eight movies, only two of them have managed to impress the moviegoers, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Sanju. The former received the benefit of its helmer’s fame and the 2016 Diwali weekend. On the other hand, Hirani is one of the rarest directors in India whose name is enough to lure people into the theatres.
There is no denying that Ranbir Kapoor has everything to build his superstardom. People know this. They love him as an actor. But they want him to choose quality scripts. Also, his over-experimenting approach to his projects has severely affected his career.
Now, the strength of his stardom heavily relies on Brahmastra. The upcoming Ayan Mukerji directional stands with a humongous 300-crore budget. The trailer has received mostly positive reactions from the viewers so far. And if turned out right, the film may aid Ranbir in getting back into the big league.
Girish Johar, a prominent film analyst, said, “He [Ranbir] probably will have to think twice or thrice before giving his nod to any film. Luckily for him, Brahmastra is standing up front. Also, his two other films (Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal and Luv Ranjan’s untitled next) are in his zone.”
No one can steal Ranbir Kapoor’s acting prowess. But he badly needs filmmakers who know how to deal with his talents and utilise them in a way that will make his future projects grand hits.
