Amazon Prime Video has just dropped the trailer of its upcoming drama ‘Sherni’. It has also revealed the Sherni release date on its platform. Readers will be intrigued to know that Vidya Balan’s Sherni will clash with Dhanush’s buzzing gangster drama, Jagame Thandhiram on Netflix. Yes, both films have set 18th June as the release date on their respective OTT platforms.
Sherni stars Vidya Balan as a forest officer who has to deal with a supposedly man-eater tigress on the prowl. It is yet another compelling role for the actress where she grapples for identity in a man’s world. The initial sequences in the trailer lay bare this premise, when disgruntled officers of the forest department state the foolhardiness of the forest ministry to send a female forest officer to deal with the crisis.
Vidya Balan‘s Forest Officer has to deal with a hostile environment, not the jungle, but the misogyny of her male colleagues and subordinates – some are out to undermine her, while some simply want the tigress shot dead. A few do offer a sane voice in the cacophony. Vijay Raaz, Neeraj Kabi, Mukul Chadda, Sharat Saxena, Brijendra Kala play these roles.
Sherni is directed by Amit Masurkar, who had earlier directed Newton. While that film dealt with the urban – tribal conflict, Sherni has the man-animal conflict at its core. The story is written by Aastha Tiku. The film seems to be inspired by the 2018 killing of tigress Avni that had led to much uproar amongst activists and the common people.
Sherni premieres on Amazon Prime Video on June 18th, the same day that Jagame Thandhiram hits Netflix.
