The comedy drama movie ‘Shiv Shastri Balboa’ was released in theatres on 10th February earlier this year. The film featured veteran actor Anupam Kher in the lead role. However, it still didn’t start streaming after completing its theatrical run (which is two months for most Hindi language films).
And now, around five months after its theatrical release, ‘Shiv Shastri Balboa’ has suddenly started streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform and that too apparently without any prior information. As of now, the movie does not even appear on the main page of the streaming service, so it looks like the movie is not being aggressively marketed by the OTT giant. Is the film worth watching? Let’s find out.
The basic plot of ‘Shiv Shastri Balboa’ follows the story of Shiv Shastri, a retired banker and a diehard fan of Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Rocky Balboa’ movies (that’s why the title). He relocates to America to live with his son Rahul (played by Jugal Hansraj). After reaching there, Shiv Shastri forms a unique bond with a housemaid named Elsa (Neena Gupta), who wants to celebrate her granddaughter’s birthday. Together, the duo embarks on a (mis)adventurous road trip to Philadelphia and Shiv Shastri reinvents his life.
‘Shiv Shastri Balboa’ received decent reviews from critics and boasts of a terrific performance by Anupam Kher. It was directed by Ajayan Venugopalan. Despite some of its flaws, it is a slice-of-life, fun-filled and sweet film which you can stream this weekend on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform. In case you are not sure about whether to watch the movie or not, you can first watch the film’s trailer to get a better idea.
