In a shocking case of Netflix bowing to pressure from political parties and religious activists, Nayanthara’s popular Tamil film ‘Annapoorani’ has been pulled from the platform. The film has recently faced grave protests owing to certain scenes in the film which have allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of people. As per a statement from co-producers ZEE Studios, Annapoorani will be back on Netflix once the offending portions have been edited out of the film.
We at Binged had earlier informed our readers that Netflix is currently in the eye of a storm regarding its streaming of the film ‘Annapoorani’. Religious activists have accused the film of insulting Lord Rama by implying that Lord Rama was a meat eater, and also for propagating “love jehad”. Another scene that has offended them no end is when Nayanthara’s Brahmin character offers Namaz before cooking non-vegetarian food in the movie.
After protesting on social media for a couple of days, matters came to a head when activists from Vishwa Hindu Parishad staged a massive protest outside Netflix’s Mumbai office this morning. The protesting activists only dispersed when the police had to be called to rein in the loud gathering.
The first protest against Annapoorani arose when Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Solanki filed a police complaint against the makers of Annapoorani for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. Next, several social media warriors jumped into the fray and bad-mouthed Netflix for streaming a film that maligned Hindus and hurt their religious sentiments. And now this – a massive protest on the streets.
Netflix’s response has been swift – Annapoorani is gone from Netflix. ZEE Studios has posted a statement clarifying their position on the film

“We have no intentions as co-producers of the film to hurt religious sentiments of the Hindus and Brahmin community and would like to hereby apologise for the inconvenience caused and hurt caused to the sentiments of the respective communities”.
Stay tuned to Binged for further updates on the Netflix – Annapoorani saga.
