The finale, “Chapter Ten: A Dream of a Dream”, served as a fitting end to FX’s masterpiece, Shogun, created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. The show is a masterclass of a limited series done right. The show’s creators remained faithful to James Clavell’s 1975 novel and bestowed ten beautiful, breathtaking, and masterfully made episodes to viewers.
Now that Shogun is over, many viewers are wondering whether they will get a second season. Well, get ready to shed some tears. Shogun Season 2 will not happen. The creators just do not have the story to continue the show.
Creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that they had no desire to produce Season 2 earlier this year. They further stressed a similar opinion in their latest interview with THR. This is what Marks said:
“I think if we had a story, if we could find a story, we would be open to it. But I don’t think that anyone ever wants to be out over their skis without a roadmap and everything. And it’s also just about, do people want more of it?”
Shogun creates a stronger appeal among viewers as a miniseries like HBO’s Watchmen or Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. The duo of Marks and Kondo did one hell of a job at faithfully adapting Clavell’s novel. The book itself is a complete story with a satisfying conclusion. Plus, the showrunners have no sequel novel that could serve as the foundation for Season 2. Creating a whole new season may result in creators taking a significant departure from the original source material. This could take the show’s story in a whole new direction, a scenario that may not sit well with the show’s fanbase. Also, Season 1 provided a clear and satisfying sense of closure, and left no room for further development.
