Shōgun Season 2 has officially been greenlit by FX. It will feature the return of Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, respectively. Both performers have also been promoted to executive producers for the second season.
Season 2 is set to commence production in January 2026 in Vancouver. In terms of plot, the upcoming season’s events will take place 10 years after Season 1.
Based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, Shōgun also drew inspiration from many real events in Japanese history. Thanks to the creative duo of Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the series premiered to both critical and audience acclaim on FX in February last year.
Following the successful first season, reports surfaced in May that FX was considering a second installment. Insider information suggested that FX was contemplating submitting the show for Emmy consideration in the drama series category instead of limited series—a move that strongly implied the likelihood of additional seasons. Soon after, it was confirmed that Sanada had agreed to return for a second season.
Alongside Sanada and Jarvis, Kondo and Marks will also serve as co-executive producers for Shōgun Season 2.
According to FX, Shōgun Season 1 achieved the highest viewership in the network’s history. The show garnered an impressive 18 Emmy Awards in 2024, notably including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Sanada, and Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Anna Sawai. Its success continued with numerous other accolades, such as the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series. Stay tuned for more updates.
