Despite the surprising box office performance of ‘Dead Reckoning’, actor Simon Pegg is confident about the success of Mission: Impossible 8. The upcoming eighth MI instalment will serve as a direct sequel to its 2023 predecessor.
In his recent interview with CinemaBlend, Pegg confirmed completing his share of filming and declared the forthcoming eighth MI entry “a f—ing incredible spectacle.” This is what he said:
“I just wrapped my last day on Mission Impossible and said farewell to everybody. And we started shooting the first part of this story in September 2020, and here we are in July 2024. What a journey has been. And what a f——ng incredible spectacle this next film is going to be, I’m so excited for you to see it. But until then, Benji Dunn signing off.”
Two main factors contributed to Dead Reckoning’s commercial failure. First, the film’s hefty budget of $291 million meant it needed a staggering $600-650 million break-even point. Despite its outstanding critical reception (90% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes) and the impressive box office performances of the previous entries, Dead Reckoning couldn’t reach that target. Secondly, its release date proved to be a poor strategic move by Paramount. Dead Reckoning hit theaters nearly a week before Barbenheimer’s record-breaking Barbie, which, along with Oppenheimer, both grossed over $950 million.
However, many experts believe Dead Reckoning’s box office performance was a fluke. Tom Cruise’s global stardom and the enduring popularity of the Mission: Impossible franchise suggest the eighth film is poised for box office success. With a budget exceeding $300 million, it’s likely to surpass Dead Reckoning’s break-even point. The outcome remains to be seen.
Mission: Impossible 8 is set to arrive in theatres globally on May 23, 2025. It stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, and Pom Klementieff. Stay tuned for more updates.
