Sony has pushed back the release date of its upcoming action flick starring Brad Pitt by a couple of weeks. The movie which was scheduled to release on July 15th will now come to the big screen on July 29th. This slot earlier had the release of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam scheduled which was recently moved to October. However, it was replaced with DC’s animated movie League of Super-Pets.
With a release date of July 29th, Bullet Train puts some distance between itself and another major release – MCU’s Thor: Love and Thunder. A release too close to Thor: Love and Thunder would have been a threat for Bullet Trains prospects. Being an established franchise and highly awaited, Thor will be moviegoers first choice. Also, the competition for the number of available screens would have been stiff.
Bullet Train is an action comedy directed by director David Leitch. David Leitch has previously directed movies like John Wicks, Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw. Brad Pitt stars as an assassin who finds himself among several other professional killers with a similar mission on the train. Apart from Brad Pitt, the ensemble cast includes Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Bad Bunny, and Sandra Bullock.
Sony also mentioned that 3000 pictures’ Where the Crawdads Sing will move a week ahead from July 22nd to July 15th, Bullet Train’s former spot. Directed by Olivia Newman, the movie is based on the popular novel of the same name.
Delaying the release of Bullet Train avoids two marquee upcoming movies to release close to each other. This is a win-win for not only Sony Pictures but also MCU. Other stakeholders such as theatre owners would be glad too as they may help them maximize revenues.
