Sony’s upcoming Superhero film Morbius has had its release date pushed back by at least another six months. The initial release date for the villain/ anti-hero movie was set on July 10th 2020 which had to be postponed due to the (ongoing) coronavirus pandemic. Morbius was then expected to drop on March 19th of 2021, which now got pushed to the month of October of this year.
As part of creating their own Superhero Cinematic Universe around Spider-man – a Spiderverse if you will, Sony has slowly started laying the groundwork for the eventual return of Spider-man from Marvel Studios to Sony Pictures. One such film was the 2018 smash hit Tom Hardy starrer Venom. The second one is the blood sucking villainous vampire Morbius, portrayed by the Academy Award winner Jared Leto.
With Spider-man set to be parting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after only two more movie appearances (as per the Disney-Sony agreement), we expect those films to be the Untitled Spider-man 3: Homecoming Sequel and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. These films will delve into the parallel dimensions concept from the comics and it will give a credible excuse for why Spider-man will eventually leave the MCU and join Sony’s Spiderverse. This will also give a credible reason (if Marvel and Sony allow it) for both Marvel and Sony characters to cross-over with each other. And we expect Tom Holland to join acting heavyweights Hardy and Leto as Spider-man at the end of the Disney-Sony agreement.
Morbius follows a scientist named Michael Morbius who is suffering from a rare blood disease. He will attempt a cure on himself that burdens him with vampirism. Morbius is aiming to do what Venom did and will most likely portray the titular character as a hero or an anti-hero.
This film is written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and is directed by Daniel Espinosa. Morbius will star Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson alongside Leto in prominent roles. Michael Keaton is expected to feature in this film as well, but his role remains unknown (Keaton portrayed The Vulture in Spider-man: Homecoming, but that is in a different cinematic universe – but anything can happen).
Morbius is expected to drop in theaters on October 8th 2021.
