SonyLIV April 2025 Report: Hits, Misses, & Hidden Gems

By Binged Bureau - May 03, 2025 @ 08:05 pm
SonyLIV April 2025 Report: Hits, Misses, & Hidden Gems

April 2025 on SonyLiv delivered a mix of captivating dramas and intriguing mysteries! Journey into the dark heart of Punjab’s music scene with the compelling conclusion of “Chamak,” or get swept away by the poignant wartime love story in the acclaimed “The Narrow Road to the Deep North.” Some licensed titles like the BBC’s “This City Is Ours” garnered praise, but the Malayalam film “Bromance” didn’t quite hit the mark. Let’s dive into the specifics of April’s offerings.

Chamak – The Conclusion (Original – Pass)

Release Date: April 4, 2025

Chamak – The Conclusion seamlessly resumes the intense world of Punjabi music, focusing on Kaala’s quest to avenge his father’s murder and reclaim his legacy from the ruthless Pratap Deol and his son. Framed and then manipulated, Kaala navigates betrayals within the Teeja Sur empire.

Stellar performances, particularly by Paramvir Cheema, Manoj Pahwa, and Mohit Malik, drive the emotionally charged narrative. While the screenplay effectively weaves subplots, occasional pacing issues and melodrama surface. The meticulously curated soundtrack enhances the storytelling. This season offers a more resolved ending, delivering a gripping blend of drama, mystery, and music.

Adrishyam 2 (Original – Fail)

Release Date: April 4, 2025

Adrishyam 2 on SonyLIV is a mediocre espionage drama about BIA agents Red Queen and Alpha thwarting terrorist threats, including a potential attack larger than 26/11.

Eijaz Khan and Pooja Gor deliver commendable performances as the lead agents. While the show simplifies complex missions for easy viewing and maintains a decent pace, it lacks depth, nuanced characters, and sharp filmmaking. The functional dialogues and background score serve the straightforward narrative. It’s a passable watch for espionage fans with low expectations.

Pravinkoodu Shappu (Licensed – Fail)

Release Date: April 11, 2025

Pravinkoodu Shappu has received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have praised the movie’s suspense, technical aspects like cinematography and editing, and strong performances, particularly highlighting the unique crime pattern and the toddy shop setting.

However, some critics found the plot predictable, the comedy hit-or-miss, and Basil Joseph’s portrayal as a police officer unconvincing. Others felt the film lacked substance, had pacing issues, or suffered from an inconsistent screenplay and weak dialogue. This Sreeraj Sreenivasan movie fell flat at the box office during its theatrical run, earning only INR 8.3 crores against its modest INR 14.5 crores budget.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Licensed – Pass)

Release Date: April 20, 2025

The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a critically acclaimed 2025 drama miniseries, adapted from Richard Flanagan’s novel. Written by Shaun Grant and directed by Justin Kurzel, it stars Jacob Elordi, Odessa Young, and Ciarán Hinds.

The series portrays Dorrigo Evans’ life across three timelines: before World War II, as a Far East prisoner of war, and decades after, revealing his love affair with his uncle’s wife, Amy. It has received a fantastic response on Rotten Tomatoes, earning the perfect 100% ‘fresh’ critic score. The series’ direction and realistic tone, along with Elordi’s work, also received praise from critics.

This City Is Ours (Licensed – Pass)

Release Date: April 29, 2025

This BBC series bagged mostly positive reviews. Critics pointed out strong performances, particularly from James Nelson-Joyce and Sean Benn. The chemistry between these two has also been praised.

Although, some have criticised the show’s generic storyline. But they did praise the acting performances, character arcs, and moral complexities associated with lead characters.

Doc (Licensed – Fail)

Release Date: April 30, 2025

Taking inspiration from the popular Italian series of the same name, this Molly Parker starrer revolves around Dr. Amy Larsen, the head of internal medicine at Minneapolis’ fictional Westside Hospital. She loses her memories of the last eight years after suffering a serious car accident, which adversely impacts her brain.

Amy’s lost memory further complicates both her personal and professional lives, as she struggles to continue her medical career, move on, and build a new life. During this time, she also endures several personal life dilemmas, including a divorce.

Bromance (Licensed – Fail)

Release Date: April 30, 2025

Bromance mostly received negative reviews upon its release. While some enjoyed the action, humour, and performances (especially Sangeeth Prathap), many found the comedy forced, Mathew’s acting exaggerated, and the film overall average or even irritating. Other key elements, such as its predictable plot, inconsistent screenplay, and lack of substance, were also criticised. Ultimately, it is a disappointing and forgettable experience.
