Hey guys, we’re back with our monthly report edition for SonyLIV in January 2025. Honestly, we weren’t expecting the streamer to start the year off this slowly. It delivered only one title to its subscribers in January, and even that was a licensed title—not an original offering.
Joju George’s Pani was the only release from SonyLIV’s rather empty lineup last month. While its competitors are consistently releasing quality TV shows in impressive numbers, SonyLIV seems to be falling far behind in the streaming race.
As for Pani, it’s a solid directorial debut from Joju George, who looks in fine form alongside Abhinaya. The villains also put in commendable performances. However, the writing in the third act could have been stronger. Still, it’s a praiseworthy effort from debutant director George, showcasing his artistic vision and commitment to storytelling over mass appeal.
Apart from Pani, the streamer offered nothing new to its subscribers last month, which is truly disappointing. Considering how SonyLIV ended 2024 on a strong note with Tanaav Season 2: Volume 2 and Cubicles Season 4, the start of 2025 should have been much grander.
We know SonyLIV has always followed a different path from its rivals in the Indian streaming market, with “quality over quantity” as one of its primary mantras. However, a strong start in January 2025 could have benefitted the platform immensely.
Releasing only Pani last month is an extremely poor start for SonyLIV. This doesn’t define its entire release strategy, but by God, it should have opened 2025 with a bang—not a whimper. Stay tuned for more updates.
