May 2025 proved to be an engaging month for SonyLIV, marked by the release of three distinctive titles that captivated both audiences and critics. From the thought-provoking social commentary of Black, White and Gray: Love Kills, to the darkly comedic Maranamass, and the intense family drama Kankhajura, the platform delivered a diverse slate of content that generated significant buzz and showcased strong performances, reinforcing SonyLIV’s commitment to compelling storytelling.
Black, White and Gray: Love Kills
OTT Release Date: May 2, 2025
This SonyLIV original series gained notable popularity upon release, largely due to the outstanding on-screen performance by lead actor Mayur More and the show’s mockumentary-style format. Set around a murder investigation in Nagpur, India, the series explores various aspects of the case, challenging viewers to reconsider the nature of justice and truth.
The show stands out thanks to exceptional performances, particularly from Mayur More, Palak Jaiswal, and Sanjay Kumar Sahu, whose nuanced portrayals add authenticity. While some minor subplots and dialogue occasionally falter, the series leaves a lasting, thought-provoking impact. Its honest exploration of caste, class, and patriarchy’s quiet violence, combined with strong cinematography and music, elevates it beyond a typical crime drama.
Maranamass
OTT Release Date: May 14, 2025
This Basil Joseph starrer performed well at the box office, earning over ₹19 crores against a modest ₹8 crore budget. Maranamass received positive critical reception during its theatrical run, praised for its fresh comedic take on the serial killer genre. Critics highlighted its dark humour, engaging pace, and quirky characters, despite pointing out occasional narrative looseness.
Performances by the lead and supporting cast also received praise. However, some critics felt the screenplay became disjointed in the second half. Still, Maranamass remains an enjoyable and breezy watch—a solid attempt at dark comedy from Malayalam cinema.
Kankhajura
OTT Release Date: May 29, 2025
After spending 14 years in prison for a youthful crime, Ashu (Roshan Mathew) re-enters the life of his brother Max (Mohit Raina), hoping to reconcile. But Ashu’s manipulative past and present troubles soon threaten Max’s life and business. As the brothers navigate their complicated relationship, they must face buried secrets, dangerous enemies, and emotional turmoil. With high stakes and blurred moral lines, the story delves into themes of family, loyalty, and the possibility of redemption.
Kankhajura, another SonyLIV original, received strong positive word-of-mouth from viewers last month. It was praised for its unique story, powerful direction, and cast performances, especially Mathew’s portrayal of Ashu. However, some viewers found the ending less than satisfying.
