From scams, legal thrillers and spy capers, SonyLIV has now moved on to the incendiary world of political dramas. Its upcoming show, Maharani, tells a fiery story, plucked straight from the annals of Bihar’s volatile politics. The series documents a turbulent time in the state of Bihar, when the inexperienced, illiterate Rabari Devi had been handed over the chief ministership of the state by her all-powerful husband, Laloo Prasad Yadav.
Fiery actress Huma Qureshi plays the screen version of Rabari Devi – the titular Maharani, or Rani Bharati as she’s also called. Sohum Shah plays her husband, the reigning CM of Bihar, who’s grievously injured in an attack on him. The first trailer for the series has just dropped on social media, and we can tell at first glance that it will be an explosive one.
What’s unique about Maharani is that tells the story from a unique vantage point, taking into account the simmering cauldron that is Bihar – complete with its caste arithmetic, rampant lawlessness and shrewd politicos. The trailer describes it aptly – that Bihar’s politics is a game of Chess, where even the rooks and horses become embroiled in caste politics.
The cast of the show is delectable. Amit Sial, Vineet Kumar, Pramod Pathak, among others, add their heft to the proceedings. SonyLIV’s Maharani is directed by Karan Sharma, and written and created by Subhash Kapoor (Jolly LLB, Jolly LLB 2). Going by the trailer, the show promises to be as compelling as the films created by Subhash Kapoor. Nandan Singh is the co-writer of Maharani. For Huma Qureshi, it is the role of a lifetime.
Maharani premieres on SonyLIV on 28th May. Have a look at the trailer here –
