SonyLIV has a new show coming up soon, with a solid focus on “family”- family being the quirky Shastri family! Titled ‘Potluck‘, the upcoming SonyLIV original show is all about loving your family, and showing it too. By the looks of the the Potluck trailer, it promises to be full-on fun and an out-and-out entertainer! Potluck premieres on SonyLIV on 3rd September.
Binged had the opportunity to indulge in a breezy, free-wheeling chat with Cyrus Sahukar and Ira Dubey, lead cast of the show. The duo plays a married couple in Potluck, the elder son and daughter-in-law of the patriarch of the Shastri family. Excerpts from the chat:
Binged: Hi Cyrus, welcome to Binged! Let’s talk about your new show Potluck on SonyLIV. Tell us a bit about the show and what’s it about.
Cyrus Sahukar: Potluck is a slice-of-life dramedy that deals with the Shastri family, which has a mother and father and their three kids; and how a health scare with the father brings the family together for a weekly potluck. Ultimately, the show gives the message that don’t wait for a catastrophe to be involved in each other’s lives.
Binged: Tell our readers about your character in Potluck, and how it’s been shaped.
Cyrus: Well, my character is of the eldest son, Vikrant. He knows what he wants in life, he chucks a comfortable job to launch a start-up, but then refuses to expand it in order to give time to his three kids. His behaviour doesn’t always match with his straitjacket father’s way of thinking… not in a very ‘Baghban’ kind of way…but more like age-different. But then that’s who Vikrant is – trying to find his own individuality in the family.
Binged: Anything exclusive about the show you haven’t shared with any other platform so far?
Cyrus: Nothing particularly about the show, but I would like to say that it was fun working with Ira again after ages, ten years after we worked together in Aisha.
Binged: So how was it like, working with each other again after Aisha?
Cyrus: Oh, it was a lot of fun working with Ira again. In fact, I got to know Ira better while working for Potluck than I did ten years back when we did Aisha together. Of course, shooting in the middle of the pandemic, living in the closed confines of a bio-bubble for 21 days straight helped to really get to know each other better. Plus, we shared a familiarity due to working on Aisha. Yet there was so much to know about the other person, coz we’ve both grown, matured and learnt so much in the ten years since we worked together. And it was a blast, really.
Binged: So who’s your favourite co-star from the cast of Potluck?
Cyrus: That’s a difficult question to answer. I wouldn’t say that I have a favourite co-star. For me, shooting for the show worked well as a collective, with a great group dynamic. All of us hung out together every day of the shoot, so it was so much more fun, somewhat like boarding school.
Binged: Your take on the OTT medium? Do you have any preferred medium- TV or films or OTT or theatre?
Cyrus: I would like to say that OTT’s been a saviour for the acting fraternity, and for the writing fraternity as well. And I love the medium. I consume a lot of my entertainment from the digital medium. Going forward, I think it will lead to a further culture of better writers, bigger shows, more creativity happening everywhere.
Binged: Any particular character in recent times you would have loved to play?
Cyrus: Oh yes, I watched this show called Barry on HBO. I would love to play a character like Barry.
Binged: Lastly, what are we likely to see you in next? What is your future projects line-up?
Cyrus: Well, I’m doing Season 2 of Mind The Malhotras….it’s way more crazier than Season 1. And there’s another show I’m doing called Kaun Banega Shekhawati. So right now, these two are taking up all my time.
Binged: That’s so awesome, Cyrus. Thank you for taking out time to talk to us at Binged. All the best for your new show!
