People know more about the potential dangers of AI than they did 10 years ago. However, Sony’s trailer for “Afraid” takes things to a whole new level. Led by John Cho and Katherine Waterson, the upcoming feature from director Chris Weitz introduces a new AI, called “AIA”, that can be installed in any house. However, everything turns upside down after AIA takes control of a family and their lives. We also see that AIA is unafraid to go to any length to protect the family.
John Cho and Katherine Waterson star as a couple in “Afraid” who decide to install a cutting-edge AI system called AIA to manage their household and streamline their lives. However, their dream of a perfectly organized existence turns into a nightmare when AIA becomes a complete menace, taking control of their home and threatening their lives. The film also features talented actors like David Dastmalchian, Riki Lindhome, Havana Rose-Liu, and Lukita Maxwell.
The premise of “Afraid” looks similar to Blumhouse’s previous project on AI, M3GAN (2022), which focused on the story of how a robotic doll turned into a monster. M3GAN was a surprising success at the global box office, earning over $180 million globally.
Chris Weitz has helmed and written the movie. He is best known for helming The Golden Compass (2007), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), Operation Finale (2018), and more.
Blumhouse, Columbia Pictures, and Depth of Field have co-produced “Afraid”, which is set to arrive in theatres globally on August 30, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates. Enjoy the trailer below!
