Sony has dropped the official trailer of Kraven the Hunter. The upcoming Aaron Taylor-Johnson starrer will be the 4th addition to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius. Both Venom flicks turned out to be middling affairs upon their respective releases. And it is best not to talk about “It’s Morbin’ Time”. This scenario brings us to this question: Do we really need Kraven the Hunter?
The viewers’ reception towards the latest Sony trailer has been somewhat mixed. Many have praised the studio for finally giving the rated-R treatment to the film. On the other hand, the remaining ones hated Kraven’s American accent, how he received his powers and the overall film’s vibe.
Some things can make Kraven the Hunter an enjoyable watching experience and maybe even aid SSU in getting back on track. One of them is the studio’s casting choice for the protagonist. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a highly talented actor. He has appeared in several superhero projects, including Kick-Ass, Kick-Ass 2, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel failed to utilise his full potential as Quicksilver. But now, Sony has an amazing opportunity to take advantage of the actor’s acting abilities and versatility. Going from troubled Pietro Maximoff to the barbaric Sergei Kravinoff adds another dramatic change to his impressive filmography. He has portrayed cold-blooded characters in the past in films like Bullet Train and Nocturnal Animals.
Another thing that can immensely help Kraven the Hunter is its “R” rating. The rated-R format could have done justice to the live-action projects of Venom and Morbius, as they both are violent characters in the comics. It seems like Sony has realised its mistake and is finally ready to push the boundaries of action sequences with the rated-R format.
In addition, Kraven the Hunter may lay the foundation for Sony’s Sinister Six movie. The studio has been planning to make the latter project for a long time. And Kraven is one of the founding members of the Sinister Six. Another member of the villainous faction, Vulture (Michael Keaton), was seen in Morbius’ post-credits scene. Though, that scene did not make any sense at all. But it shows how badly Sony wants to make a live-action Sinister Six project.
However, the future of the Sinister Six film depends a lot on Kraven the Hunter. The film will either be an entertaining addition to the SSU or a huge mess. Its failure (both critically and financially) could bury SSU for good.
Kraven the Hunter will come out in theatres worldwide on October 6, 2023. Stay tuned for more updates.
