You could write a book about Sony and its relationship with Spider-Man. They can either produce the best or the very worst from the universe. Just look at the journey from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man to Madame Web.
But now, one of these Sony projects has been ditched by Prime Video. Though the OTT platform is actively investing in Spider-Man Noir, Sony’s project Silk has a different story to tell. Prime Video just canceled it.
The project was in development for five years, and the studio itself gave the green light two years ago, but in the end, it faced cancellation.
Angela Kang, well-regarded for her work on The Walking Dead, remains with Amazon MGM Studios under an overall deal. Despite Amazon’s ongoing commitment to live-action series based on Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, the rights to the Silk character revert to Sony Pictures Television, which plans to shop the series elsewhere.
Silk’s adaptation has faced development challenges since 2019, initially commissioned with Lauren Moon to write the TV adaptation.
In 2020, Sony TV began discussions with Amazon for a Marvel series suite, led by Silk. By 2021, Amazon Studios appointed Tom Spezialy as showrunner, collaborating with writer Lauren Moon. In 2022, the Spider-Man spinoff series, including Silk, was officially announced for MGM+ and Prime Video, with Angela Kang as showrunner and executive producer.
Despite multiple script versions, including a request to reduce Silk’s centrality, Amazon delayed the writers’ room reopening post-strike. Although Kang’s latest pitch was well-received, Amazon opted to prioritize Noir starring Nicolas Cage, shelving Silk. Challenges for female-led superhero projects influenced this decision, reflecting broader trends in genre TV.
