Following the commercial success of ‘M3gan’, a horror comedy, an upcoming sequel ‘M3GAN 2.0’ was quickly announced. And now, the universe of creepy life-like robotic dolls is about to expand. Production houses Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are developing ‘Soulm8te’, an erotic thriller with a technological twist aka a M3gan spin-off film!
The movie revolves around a man who acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife.
While this news comes as a surprise to fans, many were also quick to draw similarities between the film and ‘Be Right Back’, (Episode 1, Season 2) of ‘Black Mirror’, the Emmy-winning Netflix show about individuals grappling with the adverse effects of advanced technology in a bleak, dystopian future.
‘Be Right Back’, starring Hayley Atwell and Domhnall Gleeson in leading roles, is centered around Martha, who in an attempt to bring back her deceased husband Ash, tries a new AI service that imitates the dead based upon their photos and videos. Soon, she turns a blank, synthetic body into an android that looks almost identical to Ash.
However, the episode concludes with Martha stuffing the android into a box, barely ever using it. The plot highlights the human reaction to grief. While we may try numerous means to bring our loved ones back to life, they are not at all technologically replaceable.
With this in mind, will ‘Soulm8te’ prove to be more of a ‘Black Mirror’ spinoff instead? Stay tuned to find out!
