Blumhouse Productions is responsible for a huge lot of great horror content we have watched and loved, like the ‘Insidious‘ franchise, ‘Get Out‘, and ‘Paranormal Activity‘. Their next offering however seems to be the live adaptation of an anti-hero character from a published comic.
The movie will be the story of the supernatural entity Spawn and will be starring Jamie Foxx who was notably last seen in Netflix’s vampire film ‘Day Shift‘. Jeremy Renner who plays Hawkeye in the Marvel film franchise is also strongly rumored to star in the film. Jamie has been a part of superhero movies before and played the villain Electro in Sony’s Spiderman movies, his last appearance being in the blockbuster ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.
Spawn in the comics is a former black-ops agent who makes a deal with a demon after being betrayed and killed. The demon allows him to return to Earth, but when he returns, five years have passed, his wife has moved on and he roams Earth as a disfigured spawn of hell. The comic was before this adapted into a live-action film as 1997’s Spawn movie.
The movie has been in development at Blumhouse for quite some time and finally, we are getting some updates regarding the crew. The film is getting bigger with every passing day. It has been confirmed that the makers have gotten on board writers -Scott Silver, Malcolm Spellman, and Matt Mixon. Silver is known best for the 2019’s box office juggernaut ‘Joker’ starring Joaquin Phoenix for which he also received an Oscar nomination for the best-adapted screenplay. Spellman was the creator of the Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and is currently also writing ‘Captain America: New World Order’ for Marvel Studios.
Spawn has had crossovers in the comics with Batman, so the future of the film in the DC universe is not as far off as one might imagine. The movie is now reportedly on the hunt for a cinematographer and a studio partner for the film, along with a director. It seems the success of R -rated ‘Joker’ has empowered the makers to increase the film’s scope. With ‘Black Adam’ coming up hot and ‘Deadpool 3’ featuring Wolverine announced, it seems anti-hero characters are taking away all the attention from the good guys!
