Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee has announced his next film — on a decidedly intriguing subject. His new film will capture the invention of the miracle drug that reinvented the sex lives of millions of helpless men around the world who simply couldn’t…. err….get it up. We’re talking about Viagra, the little blue pill that became the savior of numerous men’s sex lives.
Spike Lee will direct the film from a screenplay he has co-written alongside Kwame Kwei-Armah. The subject matter has been adapted from an article written by David Kushner for Esquire magazine, titled ‘All Rise: The Untold Story of The Guys Who Launched Viagra’. For those not in the know, Viagra is a breakthrough drug invented by drug manufacturer Pfizer, used to treat erectile dysfunction and impotence in men. The drug was originally invented as a treatment for heart ailments. Its ground-breaking quality to help men get it up was discovered quite accidentally. Needless to say, the film will be infinitely interesting, one that Spike Lee will do ample justice to.
Interestingly, Spike Lee has envisaged his film on Viagra as a musical. The original songs and music for the film will be written by the acclaimed songwriting duo of Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald. Studio Entertainment One will produce the film along with Matt Jackson’s Jackson Pictures, and Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks.
The film will chronicle the true events surrounding Pfizer’s discovery and launch of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra (Sildenafil). The film is still in the pre-production stages. It hasn’t even got a name nor has it been picked up by any streamer or film exhibition company yet. Spike Lee has been very active in the streaming space recently. His Da 5 Bloods premiered on Netflix, while his last film David Byrne’s American Utopia was on HBO Max.
