SonyLIV has sprung the biggest surprise on its subscribers. It has just released its much-awaited thriller film ‘Eesho‘ on its platform, which is super super early. ‘Eesho’ was to premiere on SonyLIV on October 5, as a Dussehra release. Most platforms drop content at 12 midnight, so that viewers can watch it as per their convenience. It was the same with SonyLIV. But ‘Eesho’ has started streaming on SonyLIV at around 1 pm this afternoon, which is almost 12 hours ahead of schedule.
That, however, is hardly surprising. In recent times, SonyLIV has been premiering all its Indian content, whether films or series, at least a few hours before the official time of midnight. Most Indian content drops at around 8-9 pm on the SonyLIV platform. In the case of ‘Eesho’, SonyLIV has broken its own limits and premiered the film almost 12 hours early – considerably early, if you ask us.
The blame for the early streaming of ‘Eesho’, and other content on SonyLIV, must go to ‘piracy’ – the bane of the Indian entertainment industry. It’s a known fact that any content that has even reasonable buzz around it is certain to get leaked on piracy websites – as certain as the certainty that night follows day.
To circumvent this pressing problem, SonyLIV has taken to releasing all its Indian content early. Of course, it is an even earlier release in the case of ‘Eesho’, but that’s what platforms, spooked by the spectre of piracy, have taken to doing.
Prime Video is the other platform that always releases its Indian content several hours early. Prime Video India has fallen prey to leaks more often than not. Recently, all episodes of Panchayat Season 2 were leaked. To stem their losses, Prime Video premiered Panchayat Season 2 almost 2 days early. The fear of piracy is the reason Prime Video always premieres its Indian content much earlier than the designated time.
Netflix and Disney Plus Hotstar have strict and secure systems in place, which prevent any of their content from getting leaked on piracy websites. Thus, Disney Plus Hotstar and Netflix almost always release their content at the specified time and date. Netflix has earlier faced the leak and piracy issue with its much-touted ‘Mimi’. But never again.
