We are less than a week away from the release of Squid Game Season 3 on Netflix, scheduled to premiere on June 27. As we all know, the third season will serve as the final chapter in Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) mission to shut down the deadly games and take down those responsible for them once and for all. But will he really be able to do that?
A fan theory has been gaining significant traction on social media and the internet regarding Squid Game Season 3. According to this theory, Gi-hun could become the new Front Man by the end of the show. It also suggests that he would take on the role to stop In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), the original Front Man, at all costs, but end up paying a terrible price for it.
In Season 2, we learn that the Front Man was the 2015 game winner who later became an overseer. Interestingly, he spared Gi-hun and even supported his attempted rebellion. Although Gi-hun’s uprising ultimately failed, many fans now speculate that he will become the new Front Man in the upcoming season.
The parallels between Gi-hun and In-ho hint at a possible future where Gi-hun becomes the next leader of the Squid Games. Both men are past winners, and In-ho’s journey shows that a victor can ascend to the position of overseer. Gi-hun’s potential return to the games could mirror In-ho’s, albeit driven by very different motivations. Furthermore, both characters exhibit leadership traits, with In-ho serving as a darker reflection of Gi-hun’s own nature.
We could see In-ho seeking to punish Gi-hun severely in Season 3 because of the latter’s actions in the previous season. This could push Gi-hun’s psyche to the edge, and the players’ survival might ultimately rest in his hands.
However, there’s no denying that Gi-hun’s defining trait, even amidst the brutal games, was his empathy and desire to help others. He repeatedly tried to protect fellow players, shared food, and expressed deep remorse for the deaths he witnessed. Becoming the Front Man, the orchestrator of such horrific events, would mean shedding that humanity and actively inflicting trauma on others. It would be a complete betrayal of who he is.
Gi-hun’s primary motivation after winning the game and learning the truth behind it was to dismantle the system. He was disgusted by the VIPs and the cruelty of the organization. Taking over as Front Man would mean perpetuating the very thing he vowed to destroy. Yes, some fans might enjoy this shocking plot twist, but it could also alienate a large section of the fanbase, as it might not sit well with them.
Viewers connected with Gi-hun because he was a flawed but ultimately good person trying to survive an impossible situation. If he were to become the villain, it could sever that emotional connection and make him irredeemable. His struggle against the system is what makes him compelling.
Gi-hun becoming the Front Man would feel like a cheap plot twist that sacrifices character integrity and thematic depth for shock value. It will be interesting to see how showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk handles Gi-hun’s arc in Squid Game Season 3. Stay tuned for more updates.
