The beginning of the week proved to be a happy one for the legions of Tamil and Telugu Netflix users in India. Netflix finally released the Telugu and Tamil dubbed versions of its breakout blockbuster Korean drama, ‘Squid Game‘. The dubbed versions came way too late for South Indian fans of K-dramas. Squid Game had released on Netflix back in the mid of September. Well, at least Squid Game Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions are here; better late than never!
One would think that Netflix has won its subscribers over with the release of the regional dubbed versions of Squid Game. Alas, that is not to be. Netflix has disappointed its members yet again. This time, it’s the Kannada section of the viewers who are disgruntled with Netflix. In its vast wisdom, the streaming giant has ignored another linguistically strong category of viewers. Kannada language speakers have inundated the Twitter handles of both Netflix India and Netflix India South with tweets, demanding the Kannada dubbed version of Squid Game.
The tweets range from polite requests to rude demands to sarcastic comments and finally, even outright threats. Some Netflix users have politely requested Netflix that “Even Kannadigas are eagerly waiting for this blockbuster series. Please bring in Kannada as well soon”. Some have demanded, “Nerd, Kannada also”.
Some have taken the route of sarcasm, taunting Netflix India South with, “Why not in Kannada? Please change your name into Netflix Tamil-Telugu”. And some have issued threats, “Once again proved that Netflix is Anti-Kannada. We want Squid Game in our language Kannada,we have paid huge money to get your subscription. We want content in Kannada, otherwise we can cancel you.”
As is apparent, Netflix has again disappointed a section of its viewers by releasing dubs in only 3 Indian languages yet – Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. It’ll be good for the streamer if it rectifies the anomaly and releases Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali dubs for Squid Game ASAP!
