Oh Yeong-su, breakout star of Netflix’s blockbuster Korean hit ‘Squid Game’ has been charged with sexual misconduct in his native Suwon, near Seoul, South Korea. The actor was charged yesterday, but released without detention. Oh Yeong-su has reportedly been accused of inappropriately touching a woman. The Squid Game actor has denied all charges.
The purported incident happened back in 2017. The woman, however, filed a complaint against Oh Yeong-su in December 2021. The courts dismissed the sexual misconduct charges against Oh Yeong-su in April 2022, but the case was reopened recently upon the woman’s request.
As per Oh Yeong-su’s account of the events of the day in 2017, he had merely held the woman’s hand to guide her around the lake. He added, “I apologized because she said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it, but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges.”
A court official in the Suwon Court reportedly said that “everything reported by local media is not factually correct”.
Whether the sexual misconduct charge against Oh Yeong-su is true or not, its repercussions are already being felt by the actor in his professional life. The Ministry Of Culture in South Korea pulled a government TV commercial on regulatory innovation featuring Oh Yeong-su off air after his indictment. There’s no word from Netflix on the aforementioned matter.
Oh Yeong-su became a household face globally after his appearance in Netflix’s superhit series ‘Squid Game’ as the elderly competitor Oh Il-Nam. The actor even won a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of the character. Whether Netflix will want him back in ‘Squid Game 2’ is still not known.
