After revolutionising the neo noir genre in Indian cinema with his magnificent movie ‘Andhadhun’, filmmaker Sriram Raghavan has now turned his attention to making a film on a shocking real-life crime. Sriram Raghavan and film production company Matchbox Shots are all set to make a film on the brutal murder of popular international rapper, Sidhu Moosewala. Matchbox Shots announced this morning that they’ve bought the film rights to the book, ‘Who Killed Moosewala? The Spiralling Story of Violence in Punjab’, written by Jupinderjit Singh.
Singh’s book is a gripping, definitive account of Sidhu Moosewala’s murder and the events surrounding it. Sriram Raghavan’s film, much like Jupinderjit Singh’s book, will delve deep into the circumstances surrounding Moosewala’s murder, including the sinister nexus of drugs, gang-wars, police and politicians in Punjab, and their undue influence on the youth of the state.
For those who don’t know, rapper Sidhu Moosewala was a popular figure of Punjab’s vibrant music scene. He was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Jawaharke, Punjab, in May 2022. Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi is prime accused in Moosewala’s murder.
Sriram Raghavan mentored production company Matchbox Shots is the banner behind recent noir movies Andhadhun, Monica O My Darling, and the web series, Scoop. There’s no confirmed information on where the film on Moosewala’s murder will land – in the theatres or on a streaming platform.
