Marvel Studios’ upcoming film, Thunderbolts, has hit a roadblock as Steven Yeun, initially rumoured to be part of the cast, will not be joining the antihero-centric feature, according to sources from Hollywood media portals.
The casting speculation began in February, but Marvel never officially confirmed Yeun’s involvement. Thunderbolts, facing setbacks due to last year’s writers and actors strikes, had its release date pushed from July 2024 to July 2025. Despite the delay, filming has not yet commenced.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts is rumoured to bring together a team of Marvel’s anti-heroes and villains, promising an intriguing addition to the superhero cinematic universe. But, the fate of Marvel Studios does not seem to be promising. Firstly, Disney, for the first time since 2015 is not the most money-making studio in 2023. Secondly, the Kang i.e. Jonathan Majors is now in jail and thus they have already lost the biggest villain they can have. Sadly, they will have to replace the actor playing Kang just like in Indian TV Serials or simply rewrite the entire script.
Steven Yeun, known for his roles in The Walking Dead and as the voice star of Amazon’s Invincible, already has a significant presence in the comic book adaptation realm. Currently, he’s making waves in the awards season with his Netflix limited series Beef, contending for the Golden Globe for Best Male Actor in a Limited Series.
Let’s see how Marvel and Disney sort these problems out.
