Ever since Disney Plus commenced operations in Latin America, it has commissioned numerous locally-executed productions in the region. Several Latin American shows stream on the primary Disney Plus platform of the streamer, while a few land up on Disney’s Star streaming arm – its home for adult content. One such upcoming Latin American show is the Argentinian series, ‘Santa Evita’. It is a mini series, adapted from the best-selling book of the same name, written by Argentine writer Tomás Eloy Martínez.
Santa Evita premieres on Star+ on July 26. In countries not serviced by Star+, the series will premiere on Disney Plus. In the USA, Santa Evita will most likely release on Hulu. Fortunately, for Indian viewers, Santa Evita will premiere in India on Disney Plus Hotstar, on July 26 itself.
The Argentine Spanish language series is a limited series, consisting of 7 episodes. It has a compelling storyline, derived from the astonishing real-life fate of Argentina’s First Lady Eva Perón’s body after her death in 1952. The surreal story is as shocking as it is heartbreaking. Eva Perón, spouse of then Argentine President General Perón, died in 1952. Her embalmed body endured a bumpy journey that lasted 22 years. For the first three years after death, her body remained in state, waiting for the construction of a monumental burial site.
Before the monument could be completed, the military overthrew Perón in 1955 and took over the reins of Argentina. They whisked Evita’s body away, and kept it hidden for 19 years to prevent it from becoming a weapon against the regime. For the military regime, dead Evita was even more dangerous than her being alive. But no one knew where Evita’s body was. Her wandering unburied corpse haunted the country’s political arena for over two decades. Santa Evita is the legend of the body that was never buried.
The series stars Natalia Oreiro as Eva Perón, along with Darío Grandinetti as Juan Domingo Perón. Ernesto Alterio (Colonel Moori Koenig) and Diego Velázquez (Mariano), Francesc Orella (Doctor Pedro Ara), among others, form the rest of the cast.
