Stephen Lang, the lead actor of the 2016 home invasion horror thriller movie ‘Don’t Breathe’ and its sequel ‘Don’t Breathe 2’, has hinted about the possibility of yet another sequel of the hit film franchise. Through a recent interview with ComingSoon, the ‘Avatar’ villain talked about potential plans to reprise his role as the blind man’s character Norman Nordstrom for ‘Don’t Breathe 3’.
Stephen Lang has stated that “I enjoyed filming Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2 very, very much. Just as I plan to enjoy filming Don’t Breathe 3”. However, there is still no official word on the sequel as of now.
But, even if there is a confirmation for ‘Don’t Breathe 3’ in the near future, the question is: Is there really a need for yet another sequel? And there is a good reason to be apprehensive about the unconfirmed third installment.
The first ‘Don’t Breathe’ film was undoubtedly an instant hit amongst cinema lovers and eventually also gained a cult following. The riveting survival thriller boasts of a ‘Certified Fresh’ status on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 88% critics score based on 245 reviews.
On the other hand, the sequel ‘Don’t Breathe 2’ currently holds the undesired ‘Rotten’ tag on Rotten Tomatoes with an underwhelming critics’ score of just 43% based on 79 reviews. Although the audience score for ‘Don’t Breathe 2’ is interestingly much higher at 85% compared to its critics’ score.
Moreover, ‘Don’t Breathe’ currently holds an IMDb user rating of 7.1 compared to an IMDb score of just 6 for ‘Don’t Breathe 2’. So, it is apparent that ‘Don’t Breathe 2’ failed to recreate the same magic as its predecessor. The reason could have been the change of director from Fede Alvarez, who directed the first film, to Rodo Sayagues, who took the lead in the second instalment. Or perhaps the sequel’s storyline failed to impress the critics.
In case ‘Don’t Breathe 3’ is ever made with Stephen Lang in the lead, the makers should ensure that the film’s plot is as gripping as the parent film. And secondly, Fede Alvarez should make his directorial comeback with ‘Don’t Breathe 3. Maybe that’s what the sequel needs.
For the unversed, the first ‘Don’s Breathe’ film followed a trio of three thieves namely Rocky, Alex, and Money, who break into the house of a blind war veteran Norman Nordstrom after getting a tip of a huge amount of cash under his possession. However, eventually, they are caught in a sadistic game of cat and mouse while trapped in the seemingly innocent man’s house. Whereas in ‘Don’t Breathe 2’, the tables turned as the blind man became the film’s hero who must save his adopted daughter. Both these films are streaming in India on the Netflix OTT platform.
